THE WORLD OF HIV AND DISEASE, AND SOME NEWS APPROACHES TO BLOCK IT

par R. GALLO (University of Maryland – USA), correspondant étranger.

The HIV epidemic remains in flux and rather unpredictable.  The problem is steadily mounting in certain regions of the world, where due to compound matters, therapy is currently unavailable.  No preventive vaccine is in sight.  On the other ghand remarkable recent advances have been made in our understanding of HIV biology.  Out of these studies new and better forms of therapy for inected people have become available for the industrialized world.  These therapies (targeting HIV enymes) are, however, not without problems and remain unavailable for infected people of the third world. We propose that novel (biological approaches” will also be needed.  These approaches will come out of continued basis research on HIV infection and pathogenesis.  Here I have summarized a few ideas in these directions.
