BIOLOGY AND EPIDEMIOLOGY OF NEW VARIANT CJD

par  R.G. WILL (University of Edinburgh – GB), invité.

There is now compelling evidence that variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is caused be the agent of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). There have now been 135 cases of vCJD identified in the UK and small numbers in other countries, including six cases in France.  The main risk factors for the development of variant CJD are residence in the UK, a young age and methionine homozygosity at codon 129 of the prion rotein gene.  There has been a recent decline in the annual mortality form vCJD in the UK, but the total future number of cases cannot be predicted.
